Northmoor class

Welcome to the ‘Northmoor’ class page

All about us

Northmoor is home to our youngest children in school. It is a mixed age class with children who have just started school combined with the youngest year 1 pupils. Our age range is 4-5.

Mrs Boulton and Mrs Thomas share the responsibility for teaching the class. Mrs Boulton teaches Monday to Wednesday and Mrs Thomas works Thursday and Friday. They enjoy sharing the class and working as a team. The teaching assistants who work in the class are called Mrs Pengelly and Miss Tilyard.

Our classroom is a lively and stimulating environment which supports and extends the children’s learning. It is a very inclusive environment where all have an important role in being part of the school family. Children are encouraged to be independent when taking care of their own belongings. They are also shown how to share and tidy up as part of the daily routine. We celebrate achievements throughout the day.

Our Class Charter

We are kind to each other

We listen to each other

We tidy up

We say 'please' and 'thankyou'

We always do our best.

Organisation

The children are welcomed into school on a part time basis in the Foundation Stage but quickly move to coming in on a full time basis. We begin by establishing cooperation through routines and build upon the hard work that parents have already done. The teaching of phonics and numeral recognition starts immediately and we continually assess each child’s understanding through a variety of means in order to plan for future teaching.

Children will bring home a book and some letter sounds in the first few weeks of school. We encourage parents to practise and reinforce reading skills at home.

Children also learn to count and play with number and quantity in a practical sense.

When the children settle into school, they take part in PE activities and games. They must always have their PE kit in school.

Our curriculum is explained in our newsletter. We focus upon essential skills and frequently incorporate the children’s interests into our daily planning.

Communication

Foundation Stage staff are available for brief discussions on the playground or in the classroom from 8.50 am every morning. As school begins at 9am, we encourage parents to make an appointment for deeper discussions.

We enrich our curriculum by taking the children on trips into the community and further afield in the summer term. We also enjoy visitors into school who can share their knowledge and skills. This term, we will be taking the children to the library in Langport.

Our children are very proud of their achievements and we have put together some of their work from the year so far!
