Assessing your child’s progress

We assess the progress of all children on an ongoing basis. During lessons we note responses, observe children during independent activities and mark written work. Children are also fully involved in assessing and evaluating their own progress. We regularly test writing, reading and maths.  Each May all children in Years 3, 4 and 5 sit nationally recognised tests in reading, writing,  spelling, handwriting and Mathematics. These help us to measure your child’s progress against national levels. Pupils in Year 2 are formally assessed at the end of the year. Pupils in Year 6 sit National Curriculum tests, which are externally marked, called SATs. The results of these tests are reported to you in your child’s annual report.  The results of tests provide a clear picture as to whether your child may need extra help or whether they need to be challenged beyond age related expectations.
